Today is a special day. I’m buzzing just thinking about it! The Moveable Type Truck is arriving in Bloomington today. With double entendres flying, The Moveable Type truck is the dream child of Kyle Durrie of Power and Light Press out of Portland, Oregon. In November 2010 she hatched this idea of a moveable letterpress studio. She got funding from Kickstarter.com and started planning. She took a 1982 Chevy step van and converted it into a letterpress studio! She travels with two presses: a sign press and an 1873 Golding Official No. 3 tabletop platen press. She also carts around wood and metal type so that she can print the old fashioned way, all over the country.
She started her touring in June of 2011 and wants to travel for at least 9 months, if not longer. She visits other studios, spreading the letterpress gospel, meeting amazing printers/people, and most of all having fun. Talk about amazing! Her blog is so interesting and filled with all the places we’d all like to go!
The Moveable Type Truck will be hosted tonight by The Bloomington Print Collective from 4:00 – 7:00 pm. As another note, The Bloomington Print Collective is a new community print shop that was established this year to promote access, education, and general encouragement to all that wish to know more about printmaking. I only recently found out about them, but will be finding out much more this evening. If I even get a hint of something having to do with letterpress, well I’m there!
If you go to The Moveable Type Type website you can arrange for Kyle Durrie to visit your studio or city. So hop online and make it happen! Below is a great video that was done by Jon Hall when The Moveable Type Truck visited Make Good in San Diego.
I will be posting pictures later!
